Finally we're feeling safe and we can see us getting out of this together. That's a huge relief and we're breathing and eating.
Last night, Zachary's IV line (aka a central line) was leaking, preventing us from giving him the nutrients that he needed (TPN instead of DPN). My brother-in-law told me this morning that it was going to be difficult to get a new IV line put in on a Friday and if we didn't get one today, then we most likely would need to wait until Monday. I couldn't imagine the whole weekend chasing his fluids and hoping that he would make it until then. In the end, not only did we get the line in successfully, it was done quickly and with only a mild sedation. Dr. Christina Alvira stayed after work to do this procedure tonight so we wouldn't have to wait. Our friend Jwala Karnik evidently had called one of her doctor friends in this hospital's ICU to stop by our room. She mentioned early in the afternoon that she thought that Dr. Alvira was going to do the line. Thanks Jwala! I think that really helped.
We were also moved from the general ward to the intensive care ward which is where the kids with liver transplants and heart transplants and cardiac surgery are taken care of. The nurse assigned to us only has one other patient and they have both tremendous experience and caring. They know how to solve some of the problems we have had for several days. Zachary is getting great care right now.
Right this second, his central line is leaking again, our great nurse Angelina is out looking for a doctor to look at it and its possible that we have new line issues, but at least now we are getting the attention and care that he needs. Basically, we see this working out. Phew!
Thanks to everyone today who helped move us to our new room. Thank you Laura, Jwala, the Kliens, Nory, Margarita and Eli, Dr. Alexender (truly a god), Dr. Bass, Dr. Christina Alvira, Monica, my mom, deb's mom, Feldy, our new nurses, the Grandpas and everyone else whose wishing us well.
